WINE BANNED IN NORTH CAROLINA

InZINerator, a zinfandel blend produced by Super Hero Wines retailing for $15, was recently outlawed in North Carolina.  The state claims it would induce minors to drink alcohol.

The artist, Michael Harants, 30, designed the label to appeal to his peers who are comic book collectors and video gamers. (Average age of video gamers is 25-35).  Three different labels are available in one case enticing consumers to collect all three.  Each series will be a limited edition release.  The wine is a delicious blend of Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon & Syrah crafted in a fruit forward style, to appeal to the Millennial age group.

For more information on the 2003 InZINerator and/or availability go to www.inzinerator.com or call Jana Harvey @ Creative Wine Concepts 707-968-9575.

Jana Littman Harvey named President of Scott Harvey Wines.

Bringing 25 years’ experience promoting wines of Napa Valley, Jana is joining her husband, heading up sales and marketing for Creative Wine Concepts.  This collection of “niche brands that over deliver” features flagship line, Scott Harvey Wines from Amador County as well as the eclectic InZinerator wines.

New label, “Jana,” will debut with a Bordeaux Blend from Napa Valley in addition to Rieslings from both Napa Valley and the Finger Lakes region in New York State.

Scott Harvey 2003 Amador County Barbera was honored as one of the three best Barbera wines produced in the world on December 2 at the Monferrato Festival in Alessandria, Italy.

The 355 entries included wines from Australia, South Africa, Argentina and Slovenia, and all three award winners were California wines from the Amador County appellation. In fact, other than wines entered from the Piedmonte region in Italy, only Amador County wines qualified for the top honors. With like terrain, soil and climate, this intriguing detail highlights the similarities between Piedmonte and Amador County and the ability to craft a World Class varietal.

This Cab- Based Bordeaux blend really surprised me. It's a welcome addition to the mid-priced Napa pantheon. Rich, soft and mouth-filling it has blackberry and cherry pie filling, cocoa and sweet oak flavors that finish smooth and dry. Drink now - 2009.

Zin doesn't need a legislative measure; it just needs an appreciative group with a corkscrew, and maybe some barbeque. If Migden ever decides to actually try a Zinfandel, she'll be hard-pressed to find a better one than this. It's complex and delicious, a voluptuous wine with flavors of blueberry and blackberry, earth and mushroom, and additional aromas of chocolate, graphite and vanilla. The tannins are firm and the nice acidity, good structure and excellent balance hint that it might still be tasting great in 5 to 10 years or more, though there's no particular reason to wait. Drink it now before the legislature decides to make Zinfandel a museum piece

(89) Scott Harvey 2003 Old Vine Selection Zinfandel (Amador County)
A tremendous concentration of cherry, white pepper, coffee and thyme flavors marks this distinctive, complex Zin.  It’s very dry and supple, with good heft and fairly thick tannins.  Best over the near term.---S.H.

“1 PUFF” 87 Scott HARVEY Old Vine Select Zinfandel Amador County 2003
Reasonably well-focused aromas of blackberry and minerals are filled out by a nicely integrated dollop of sweet oak, and if the nose shows a touch of tartness to its fruit, it nevertheless keeps that fruit in full view.  The wine is supple and balanced in texture and a touch round and open at the front of the palate before it firms up nicely in the finish.     $25.00
Key - “1 cloud” = an admirable wine, tasty, focused, attractive, about 25% of wine taste.

Curtis Green “Tasting Notes”
Scott Harvey Syrah, Amador County, Mountain Selection, 2003. About $17 a bottle.
Scott Harvey has been making good wine for more than 30 years.  Previous haunts include Renwood Winery in Amador County and Folie à Deux in Napa Valley.  He introduced the eponymous Scott Harvey label, with its focus on Syrah, Zinfandel and Barbera, about a year and a half ago.  And the excellent 2003 Syrah shows the value of long experience.  This red wine is what Harvey describes as “user-friendly, “meaning that the tannic structure is firm, but not tongue-biting.  You’ll find plenty of ripe, soft fruit and some French oak aging to knit it all together.  It’s convincing effort – smooth and seamless as a well-delivered sermon.  Harvey refers to Scott Harvey Wines as a “virtual winery” because he owns neither vineyards, nor a winery facility.  Past endeavors “always started with the winery first,” but this time he decided to “build the inventory first,” using purchased grapes – many of them from vineyards owned by family members – and a rented facility.  During a recent phone conversation, the European-trained Harvey noted that he puts an emphasis on how a wine tastes with food.  Before settling on a final blend, he always takes a sample of wine home to try it over a meal with his wife.  “Wine has to match food,” he said.

Wine of the Week!
2003 Scott Harvey Syrah, Amador County ($25): Ripe aroma of red and black fruits, with hints of oak and clove peeking through. A lighter weight wine that many, but handsome and silky. The entry is tart and the flavors are easy to access since tannins are modest. The alcohol (14.5%) is a tad higher than I prefer, but the structure is near-perfect. Stylish and nicely balanced.

InZINerator ................................

Wine Spectator OnLine Unfiltered
May 24th, 2006

• Look! In the sky! It's a bottle of wine! It's a Zin! It's … (kids, cover your eyes) … InZINerator. And it's banned in South Carolina. The state liquor authority ruled against allowing sales of this California Zinfandel blend, produced by Super Hero Wines, because of concerns that the character that graces the bottles would encourage children to buy wine. But Super Hero Wines says InZINerator was designed to appeal to wine-loving comic-book collectors and video gamers, who, on average, range in age from 25 to 35. Though InZINerator is not really a superhero, at $15 a bottle, he will help gamers save their money so they can finally afford to move out of their parents' basements.
